The Ruthless Rap Assassins were a Hip-Hop collective that lived in the Crescents. Under the management of Manchester pioneer Greg Wilson, they released their debut project ‘Killer Album’ in 1990, receiving critical acclaim for their music’s conscious content that looked at the personal experience and roots of their families in this country and produced a poignant social commentary on the prevalent racism in the UK. The trio are hailed as paving the way for UK Hip-Hop with Roots Manuva once stating "After 20 years the Assassins are as relevant as any Hip-Hop. They put a UK black tilt on soundscape and dialogue. I would say that their music is the roots of grime." They were celebrated for rapping with their Manchester accents, speaking how they spoke and from personal experience, during a point in time in which much of UK Hip-Hop culture was saturated with dependence on stateside influence.
